We explore various philosophies and its principles to assess their appropriateness as guides in these accelerating exponential times
Stoicism. Stoicism is a philosophical school that originated in ancient Greece and was founded by Zeno of Citium in the early 3rd century BC. Stoicism emphasizes rationality, virtue, and self-control as the key to leading a good life.
The philosophy teaches that individuals should focus on what they can control, accept what they cannot control, and remain indifferent to external circumstances beyond their control.
Twenty-four years ago, Ray Kurzweil predicted computers would reach human-level intelligence by 2029. This was met with great concern and criticism. In the past six months technology experts have come around to agree with him. According to Kurzweil, over the next two decades, AI is going to change what it means to be human. We are going to invent new means of expression that will soar past human language, art, and science of today. All of the concepts that we rely on to give meaning to our lives, including death itself, will be transformed.\ \ Speakers:\ Ray Kurzweil\ Inventor, Futurist \& Best-selling author of ‘The Singularity is Near’\ \ Reinhard Scholl\ Deputy Director, Telecommunication Standardization Bureau\ International Telecommunication Union (ITU)\ Co-founder and Managing Director, AI for Good\ \ The AI for Good Global Summit is the leading action-oriented United Nations platform promoting AI to advance health, climate, gender, inclusive prosperity, sustainable infrastructure, and other global development priorities. Vernor Vinge is one of the foremost thinkers about the future of artificial intelligence and the potential for a technological singularity to occur in the coming decades. He’s a science fiction writer who’s had a profound impact on a wide range of authors including: William Gibson, Charles Stross, Neal Stephenson and Dan Simmons.
Many of Vinge’s works are brilliant. Among them are some of my all-time favorites in the SF genre. And he’s been recognized with numerous awards, including seven Hugo nominations and five wins, despite writing only eight novels and 24 short stories and novellas over a span of five decades.
Human consciousness is not confined to the brain and body, but is embedded within non-local fields of information, and trusting intuitive feelings can lead to unexpected and successful outcomes.
OpenAI’s board members, who are definitely not Effective Altruists, will determine when its created artificial general intelligence. It may or may not kill you.
