Mind Over Matter: Cognitive Neuroengineering

I had a little more invested in BCI.

Brain-machine interface—once the stuff of science fiction novels—is coming to a computer near you. The only question is: How soon? While the technology is in its infancy, it is already helping people with spinal cord injuries. Our authors examine its potential to be the ultimate game changer for any number of neurodegenerative diseases, as well as behavior, learning, and memory.

  1. John M Schnidt says:

Good paper, but it always amazes me how the experts can see so much happening and predict so many future outcomess, without realizing the very likely consequence of the convergence of bi-directional BCI and other technological developments being BCBI (brain-computer-brain interface), effectively 1->1, 1->M, M->1 and M->M telepathy.

The potential implications of such developments are major and the human population is not at all prepared for them, nor heading toward preparedness. It seems that either denial or the inability to see beyond the obvious prevents us from collectively addressing such plausible, even predictable futures, deciding what is strategically desirable and guiding the various streams of development accordingly.
