Stephen L. Reed, BSc.

Stephen L. Reed, BSc. is the principal developer at, which is an open source project to create artificial intelligence. His approach is to first construct a bootstrap English dialog system that will acquire linguistic and commonsense skills to improve its own performance. His project is hosted at SourceForge where it is ranked in the top 0.5%. Releases to date include the largest freely available English lexicon in RDF, the RDF Entity Manager, and the cognitively-plausible, Incremental Fluid Construction Grammar.
Prior to forming, Steve worked seven years at Cycorp, Inc., the creators of the Cyc Knowledge Base, where he managed several DARPA-sponsored projects.
His interests include: The Singularity, Artificial General Intelligence, AGI-suitable Computer Architecture, English Dialog Systems, Reading Comprehension, Knowledge Representation, Knowledge and Skill Acquisition, Learning, Hierarchical Control Systems, Automatic Programming, Robotics, Nanotechnology, and Life Extension. Steve’s blog tracks his plans, designs, progress and releases. His documentation includes Wikipedia articles that he has created or elaborated.
Steve authored Mapping Ontologies into Cyc (with Doug Lenat) and Semantic Annotation for Persistence.
Steve earned his BSc. in Applied Mathematics from S.U.N.Y. at Stony Brook in 1973. He subsequently attended the Computer Science Ph.D. program of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until 1974.
