Marios G.
Belibassakis, M.S. is Vice-Consul for Economic & Commercial Affairs
at the Consulate General of Greece in San Francisco.
Marios was born and raised in Athens, Greece where at
the age of 28 he began his public service career as Commercial
Attaché within the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs
(2002).
Since joining the Ministry nine years ago, Marios has
gained solid professional experience on a broad range of issues from
European Union (EU) policy to development cooperation, trade and
commerce.
His first posting was in Geneva, Switzerland (2003) where,
during the Greek Presidency of the EU, he was appointed EU/UN Affairs
Officer at the Hellenic Mission to the UN, responsible for the
coordination of EU Member States’ activities during the United Nations
sessions for the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the
Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE).
Marios subsequently served as Second Secretary for
Economic & Commercial Affairs, at the Permanent Representation of Greece
to the EU in Brussels, Belgium (2003–2006) where he was the national
representative for the Development Cooperation Working Group within the
EU Council. During his tenure, he acted as interlocutor during numerous
EU Council Ministerial sessions and represented Greece at several
international Millennium Development Goal and foreign trade conferences
in the Benelux and Mauritius.
In 2006, he was assigned as Commercial Attaché at
the Commercial Office of the Greek Embassy in Dubai, United Arab
Emirates. In this capacity, he actively advocated for increased trade
and commercial relations between Greece and the Emirate and ensured
Greek representation at a variety of international exhibitions in the
UAE. Through the organization of extensive senior-level government and
business delegation missions to the Emirates, including the first
official visits of the President of the Hellenic Republic and of the
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, he contributed
significantly to the strengthening and consolidation of the partnership
between the two countries.
In 2008, Marios was appointed Head of the new
Commercial Office that has been established within the Hellenic General
Consulate in San Francisco. He took up his duties last October 2008,
bringing with him valuable international and cross-cultural professional
experience. Some his initiatives during these three years period
include: bridging Silicon Valley & Greece, joint events with the Italian
Cultural Institute & the American Jewish Committee, promotion of Greek
businesses in California, promotion of Greek Wines at the LA Greek Film
Festival, etc.
Marios earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in
Political Science and International Relations and a Master of Science
Degree in International Politics and Security from the Panteion
University of Athens.
