Professor Kenneth R. Miller
Kenneth R.
Miller, Ph.D., FAAAS is Professor of Biology,
Royce Family Professor for Teaching Excellence, Brown
University.
Ken’s research work on cell membrane structure and function has produced
more than 50 scientific papers and reviews in leading journals,
including CELL, Nature, and Scientific
American.
He is coauthor of four different high school
and college biology textbooks which are used by millions of students
nationwide.
One of his principal interests is the public understanding of evolution.
He has written a number of articles defending the scientific integrity
of evolution, answering challenges such as “intelligent design”, and
has debated a number of anti-evolutionists.
His books include
Finding Darwin’s God: A Scientist’s Search for Common Ground Between
God
and Evolution,
Only a Theory: Evolution and the Battle for America’s Soul,
and
Prentice-Hall Biology.
Ken’s papers include
Oligomeric Rings of the Sec61p Complex Induced by Ligands Required
for
Protein Translocation,
Three-dimensional structure of a photosynthetic membrane,
The bacterial SecY/E translocation complex forms channel-like
structures
similar to those of the eukaryotic sec61p complex,
Analysis of the thylakoid outer surface. Coupling factor is limited
to
unstacked membrane regions, and
The light-harvesting chlorpohyll-protein complex of photosystem II.
Its location in the photosynthetic membrane.
Ken earned his B.Sc. in Biology at
Brown University in 1970 and his Ph.D. in Biology at
the University of Colorado in 1974.
In 2006 he was awarded Fellow of the American Association for the
Advancement of Science.
