Jay Cornell
Jay Cornell
has been fascinated by science fiction and the future
since the first grade, when he read
The Wonderful Flight to the Mushroom
Planet by Eleanor Cameron. He reread it several times throughout
elementary school, and years later was disappointed to discover that
there were actually many sequels the school library didn’t
have.
While a student at the University of Michigan he spent a summer
working at Arcosanti, helping
build what he hoped would become a model for cities of the future. After
graduation he had a career in publishing, and pursued his futurist
interests as an early member of the L5 Society. For years
he was Associate Publisher of Gnosis Magazine, and in
the
late 1990s began doing web and new media work for many
clients.
In 2009 and 2010 he was Managing Editor of h+ Magazine, and finally
able
to write and edit professionally about science, technology, and the
future. A number of his h+
pieces got noticed by major websites such as Slashdot, Wired, and
Instapundit.
His current futurological focus involves looking at past visions of
the future, especially the
ways in which technological advances have often produced
unanticipated
side effects instead of the expected benefits.
