Professor Greg Van Alstyne

Greg Van Alstyne, BA (Hons) MSc is Associate Professor of Design, Innovation, Strategic Foresight at OCAD University.
 
Greg is a futurist, design strategist, and creative director with strengths in research, writing and concept development, visualization, and art direction and design management. He has more than twenty-five years experience in art and editorial direction, interaction design, communication design, branding, logo and typeface development for international clients. He is experienced in presentation, process facilitation, team management, program development, group critique, and evaluation. His current research investigates the relationship between design and emergence in complex techno-social systems; and the future of media.
 
Prior to his appointment at OCAD, he was the inaugural director of the Institute without Boundaries, a post-graduate, interdisciplinary design program established by Bruce Mau Design and George Brown College. He directed and mentored student teams in the conception, development, and production of “Massive Change: The Future of Global Design”, a multi-platform project including an international exhibition, book, events and other public outcomes. In the 1990s Greg was founder of the Department of New Media at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, where he co-produced the first MoMA Web site, interactive environments in collaboration with MIT Media Lab, and other projects.
 
Greg is a frequent lecturer at national and international events. His recent public presentations include a panel on research and job creation for the Council of Ontario Universities, a lecture on visual thinking at University of Toronto’s KMDI, and a piece on Foresight Scenarios as Design Thinking at the DOM Conference in Linz, Austria.
 
Greg earned his BA with honors in art, art history, architecture, computer-graphics, cinema, and semiotics at the University of Toronto in 1987. He earned his Master of Science (MS) in Integrated Digital Media at New York University in 2008.
