Professor Erik Brynjolfsson

Erik Brynjolfsson, Ph.D. is the Schussel Family Professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management, Director of the MIT Center for Digital Business, Chair of the MIT Sloan Management Review, and the Editor of the Information Systems Network. His research and teaching focuses on how businesses can effectively use information technology (IT) in general and the Internet in particular. He is also coauthor of Wired for Innovation: How Information Technology is Reshaping the Economy and of The Second Machine Age: Work, Progress, and Prosperity in a Time of Brilliant Technologies.
 
Erik’s research and teaching focuses on three questions:

• How can information technology transform the structures of markets and firms?
• What is the impact of information technology investments on productivity and business value?
• How does the Internet affect commerce in general and information goods in particular?

His work has been recognized with nine “Best Paper” awards from fellow academics and five U.S. Patents. He is frequently cited in the business press, and was named one of five “E-Business Visionaries” by BusinessWeek and one of the two most influential academics by Optimize magazine.
 
He has served on the Editorial Boards of the Communications of the ACM, Information Systems Research, Information Technology and People, Journal of Organizational Computing and Electronic Commerce, the International Journal of Electronic Commerce, and Management Science. Erik was also the past co-chairman of the Workshop on Information Systems and Economics (WISE).
 
Erik is on the academic advisory board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, and Time Magazine’s Board of Economists. He is co-principal investigator on several grants by the National Science Foundation to study Information Technology, Organizational Transformation and Productivity. Erik is the coeditor of two books, Understanding the Digital Economy: Data, Tools, and Research and Strategies for E-Business Success, and coauthored Fostering Research on the Economic and Social Impacts of Information Technology on behalf of the National Research Council.
 
At MIT, Erik teaches courses on the Economics of Information and on Information Technology and Organizations. He also lectures and consults worldwide for public and private organizations.
 
A graduate of Harvard University, (Magna cum Laude with B.A. and M.S. degrees in Applied Mathematics and Decision Science), his Ph.D. is in Managerial Economics from MIT. Before joining the MIT faculty, he cofounded and directed a software development and consulting firm and taught two of the first courses on Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge-based Systems at Harvard University. From 1996–1998, he was a Visiting Associate Professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and from 2004–5, he was Marvin Bower Fellow at Harvard Business School. He currently serves as a director or advisor for several firms and nonprofit organizations.
