Claude R. Phipps, Ph.D. is Managing Partner at Photonic Associates, LLC. He recently authored No Wonder You Wonder!: Great Inventions and Scientific Mysteries.

Photonic Associates is a veteran-owned, Santa Fe high-technology company that provides detailed theoretical and experimental investigation of systems based on laser-surface interactions, and related lasers and sensors, especially in the new field of laser space propulsion which they helped create. They maintain a 20-year database of major results in laser-surface interaction. They have completed demanding technical contracts for NASA, AFOSR, AFRL Edwards, DoD, MDA, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), as well as numerous commercial entities.

Claude has written over 240 journal publications and conference presentations, including 36 invited presentations, a keynote paper, a technical book chapter and edited and coedited many books. Read the full list of his publications!

Claude edited Laser Ablation and its Applications, High-Power Laser Ablation: 27–30 April 1998 Sante Fe, New Mexico, High-Power Laser Ablation III: Proceedings of Spie, 24–28 April 2000 Santa Fe, USA, High-power Laser Ablation IV, High-power Laser Ablation V, High-power Laser Ablation VI, High-power Laser Ablation VII, and International Symposium on High Power Laser Ablation 2010, and coedited Beamed Energy Propulsion: 6th International Symposium and High-Power Laser Ablation II: 1–5 November 1999, Osaka, Japan.

His patents include Measuring apparatus sensitive to rotational but not translational or vibrational movement and Laser plasma thruster.

Claude earned his B.S. with honors in Electrical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1961. He earned his M.S. with honors in Electrical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1963. He earned his Ph.D. in Plasma Physics at Stanford University in 1972.
