A team of Chinese scientists introduced a quantum communication technique that they say could help secure Web 3.0 against the formidable threat of quantum computing.

Their approach, called Long-Distance Free-Space Quantum Secure Direct Communication (LF QSDC), promises to improve data security by enabling encrypted direct messaging without the need for key exchange, a method traditionally vulnerable to quantum attacks.

They add the approach not only enhances security but also aligns with the decentralized ethos of Web 3.0, offering a robust defense in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Research team uncovers universal code driving the formation of all cell membranes https://spanish.lifeboat.com/blog/2024/02/research-team-uncovers-universal-code-driving-the-formation-of-all-cell-membranes https://spanish.lifeboat.com/blog/2024/02/research-team-uncovers-universal-code-driving-the-formation-of-all-cell-membranes#respond Thu, 29 Feb 2024 13:22:32 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2024/02/research-team-uncovers-universal-code-driving-the-formation-of-all-cell-membranes

Researchers at the University of Alberta have uncovered what they say has been the missing puzzle piece ever since the genetic code was first cracked.

The code is the universal set of rules that allow living organisms to follow genetic instructions found in DNA and RNA to build proteins. In new research, published in BMC Biology, the U of A team describes a unifying code that guides the binding of those proteins with lipids to form membranes—the wrapper around all and cell components.

“Sixty years ago, scientists started to work on how genes encode proteins, but that’s not the end of the story,” says biochemistry professor Michael Overduin, executive director of the National High Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Center. “Along with DNA, RNA and proteins, living cells require membranes. Without the , it’s like you’ve got a house with no walls.”

Revolutionary mRNA Vaccine for Pancreatic Cancer https://spanish.lifeboat.com/blog/2024/02/revolutionary-mrna-vaccine-for-pancreatic-cancer https://spanish.lifeboat.com/blog/2024/02/revolutionary-mrna-vaccine-for-pancreatic-cancer#respond Mon, 26 Feb 2024 01:22:46 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2024/02/revolutionary-mrna-vaccine-for-pancreatic-cancer

I have written a lot about vaccines that treat cancer. Now we have another new mRNA vaccine to treat pancreatic cancer that has shown promising results in phase 1 clinical trials and is now entering a larger phase 2 clinical trial. This is exciting news for a deadly cancer that attacks tens of thousands of people each year.

The mRNA vaccine technology is going to be one of the leading technologies for cancer treatments going forward. If it can make a meaningful dent in the course of pancreatic cancer, it may well become one of the primary tools for oncologists in treating this pernicious disease.

As I usually do, let’s review this vaccine and the clinical trial results.

Nanorobots in Clinical Practice: Advancing Towards Human Trials https://spanish.lifeboat.com/blog/2024/02/nanorobots-in-clinical-practice-advancing-towards-human-trials https://spanish.lifeboat.com/blog/2024/02/nanorobots-in-clinical-practice-advancing-towards-human-trials#respond Sun, 25 Feb 2024 21:22:24 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2024/02/nanorobots-in-clinical-practice-advancing-towards-human-trials

Discussions are emerging about conducting clinical trials on humans with nanorobots for medical applications. Currently, in the United States, four burgeoning companies are striving towards this aim, working to advance their nanomachines into Phase 1 studies, subsequent to laboratory research and preclinical trials on animals.

The article “Delivering drugs with microrobots”, published in Science on December 7, 2023, has recaptured the international scientific community’s attention on the practical, effective use of nanorobots in Clinical Practice and Medicine.

Its author, Bradley Nelson, a Robotics and Intelligent Systems professor at ETH Zurich, poses a straightforward question: where are these diminutive biocompatible machines, designed to be injected into the human body for more efficient exploration, internal repair, and precise, targeted drug delivery? Researchers have discussed them for years – he notes – yet we still do not see them progressing from laboratories to the forefront of clinical trials. How close are we to this milestone?

New Color-Changing Invention Enables “Time Travel” Within Cells https://spanish.lifeboat.com/blog/2024/02/new-color-changing-invention-enables-time-travel-within-cells https://spanish.lifeboat.com/blog/2024/02/new-color-changing-invention-enables-time-travel-within-cells#respond Sat, 24 Feb 2024 17:22:50 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2024/02/new-color-changing-invention-enables-time-travel-within-cells

Researchers at Trinity College Dublin, working together with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), have developed special fluorescent, color-changing dyes that, for the first time, can be used to simultaneously visualize multiple distinct biological environments using only one singular dye.

When these dyes are encapsulated in delivery vessels, like those used in technologies like the COVID-19 vaccines, they “switch on” and give out light via a process called “aggregation-induced emission” (AIE). Soon after delivery into the cells their light “switches off” before “switching on” again once the cells shuttle the dyes into cellular lipid droplets.

Survival Chances For Cardiac Arrest During CPR https://spanish.lifeboat.com/blog/2024/02/survival-chances-for-cardiac-arrest-during-cpr https://spanish.lifeboat.com/blog/2024/02/survival-chances-for-cardiac-arrest-during-cpr#respond Thu, 22 Feb 2024 17:22:29 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2024/02/survival-chances-for-cardiac-arrest-during-cpr

According to a study published in the BMJ, a person’s chance of surviving cardiac arrest while receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in a hospital is 22%, but that declines rapidly after only one minute to less than 1% after 39 minutes. The likelihood of leaving with no major brain damage is similar, declining from 15% after one minute of CPR to less than 1% after 32 minutes without a heartbeat.

Only around 25% of patients survive to hospital discharge after being admitted to the emergency department for cardiac arrest. This common catastrophic medical emergency with a high mortality rate is an important public health issue, affecting around 300,000 adults every year in America alone. Unfortunately, studies have shown that long resuscitation times are linked to lower odds of survival, but there are no specific recommendations on when to stop resuscitation.

This study was designed to measure the effects of CPR duration, using the largest cardiac dataset in the world, utilizing data from 348,996 adults with an average age of 67 years old who experienced an in-hospital cardiac arrest. CPR was defined as the interval between the start of compression and the first return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) or the termination of resuscitation. The main measures of interest were survival to discharge and favorable function at discharge, defined as a brain performance score of 1 representing good cerebral performance, and 2 representing moderate cerebral disability on a 5-point scale.

A Sprinkle of Gold Dust Could Help Reverse Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease https://spanish.lifeboat.com/blog/2024/02/a-sprinkle-of-gold-dust-could-help-reverse-symptoms-of-parkinsons-disease https://spanish.lifeboat.com/blog/2024/02/a-sprinkle-of-gold-dust-could-help-reverse-symptoms-of-parkinsons-disease#respond Tue, 20 Feb 2024 17:24:38 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2024/02/a-sprinkle-of-gold-dust-could-help-reverse-symptoms-of-parkinsons-disease

Scientists are investigating whether an oral drug sprinkled with gold nanoparticles could one day treat neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis.

The experimental medicine, called CNM-Au8, has now shown success in boosting the brain’s metabolism in phase II clinical trials.

Research on the safety and efficacy of the daily drug is still ongoing, but the initial results have researchers hopeful. The medicine contains suspended nanoparticles of gold that can apparently pass the blood-brain barrier and improve energy supply to neurons, preventing their decline.
