Artificial intelligence could end disease, lead to “radical abundance,” Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis says https://lifeboat.com/blog/2025/04/artificial-intelligence-could-end-disease-lead-to-radical-abundance-google-deepmind-ceo-demis-hassabis-says https://lifeboat.com/blog/2025/04/artificial-intelligence-could-end-disease-lead-to-radical-abundance-google-deepmind-ceo-demis-hassabis-says#respond Tue, 22 Apr 2025 02:07:56 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2025/04/artificial-intelligence-could-end-disease-lead-to-radical-abundance-google-deepmind-ceo-demis-hassabis-says

When Demis Hassabis won the Nobel Prize last year, he celebrated by playing poker with a world champion of chess. Hassabis loves a game, which is how he became a pioneer of artificial intelligence. The 48-year-old British scientist is co-founder and CEO of Google’s AI powerhouse, called DeepMind. We met two years ago when chatbots announced a new age. Now, Hassabis and others are chasing what’s called artificial general intelligence—a silicon intellect as versatile as a human but with superhuman speed and knowledge. After his Nobel and a knighthood from King Charles, we hurried back to London to see what’s next from a genius who may hold the cards of our future.

Demis Hassabis: What’s always guided me and— the passion I’ve always had is understanding the world around us. I’ve always been— since I was a kid, fascinated by the biggest questions. You know, the— meaning of— of life, the— nature of consciousness, the nature of reality itself. I’ve loved reading about all the great scientists who worked on these problems and the philosophers, and I wanted to see if we could advance human knowledge. And for me, my expression of doing that was to build what I think is the ultimate tool for advancing human knowledge, which is— which is AI.

Scott Pelley: We sat down in this room two years ago. And I wonder if AI is moving faster today than you imagined.

WASHINGTON — Blue Shepard launched six women, including a pop star and TV show host, on a suborbital flight of the company’s New Shepard vehicle April 14.

New Shepard lifted off at 9:30 a.m. Eastern from the company’s Launch Site One in West Texas after a problem-free countdown. The vehicle’s capsule, RSS Kármán Line, reached a peak altitude of 106 kilometers before landing 10 minutes and 21 seconds after liftoff.

The NS-31 mission, the company’s 11th crewed suborbital flight, flew a routine profile but with a unique complement of spaceflight participants. It was the company’s first mission to carry only women, and the first all-woman spaceflight of any kind since Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space on a solo flight in 1963.

How to solve Australia’s maths problem https://lifeboat.com/blog/2025/04/how-to-solve-australias-maths-problem https://lifeboat.com/blog/2025/04/how-to-solve-australias-maths-problem#respond Tue, 15 Apr 2025 11:02:41 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2025/04/how-to-solve-australias-maths-problem

Australia has a maths problem. A new Grattan report shows that one in three Australian school students fail to achieve proficiency in maths.

The report, The Maths Guarantee: How to boost students’ learning in primary schools, shows that students from disadvantaged backgrounds struggle the most with maths. But one in five students from well-off families struggle too.

In a 2023 international maths test, only 13 per cent of our Year 4 students excelled, compared to 22 per cent in England and 49 per cent in Singapore.

Alyssa Carson, otherwise known by her call sign ‘NASA Blueberry’, is not only one of the youngest faces in the space agency but also one of the leading figures when it comes to exploration of Mars — and that could lead her to be the first person to ever set foot on the planet.

She’s currently 24 years old but her dreams first began at age 3, when she saw a cartoon that sparked her brain to begin dreaming of space travel.

As revealed by ShareAmerica, Carson has undergone a number countless training sessions and preparations for becoming an astronaut, and is currently studying a PhD in astrobiology which would be invaluable during a hypothetical trip to Mars.
