Real life modern Frankenstein.

World-leading scientists have called for a halt on research to create “mirror life” microbes amid concerns that the synthetic organisms would present an “unprecedented risk” to life on Earth.

The international group of Nobel laureates and other experts warn that mirror bacteria, constructed from mirror images of molecules found in nature, could become established in the environment and slip past the immune defences of natural organisms, putting humans, animals and plants at risk of lethal infections.

OpenAI’s New Ad Shows ‘Reasoning’ AI Making Basic Errors https://spanish.lifeboat.com/blog/2024/12/openais-new-ad-shows-reasoning-ai-making-basic-errors https://spanish.lifeboat.com/blog/2024/12/openais-new-ad-shows-reasoning-ai-making-basic-errors#respond Sat, 07 Dec 2024 06:02:46 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2024/12/openais-new-ad-shows-reasoning-ai-making-basic-errors

“AI” AS THE MODERN VERSION OF BELEIF IN A MAGICAL ALCHEMY. Although widely promoted as being possible, it grows increasingly ridiculous the more that complexity is added. This means a gigantic market bubble is building up for a tremendous burst, UNLESS, the obvious is done: simply treat it as any other useful human-created tool, such as a hammer, a screw driver, or an airplane. Are screw drivers going to rise up and threaten humanity? It is not physically possible in the real physical universe that “ai”, or any other human-created tool, will ever pose a danger to humanity. It CAN be misused by humans, but cannot of its own non-existent will decide to be a danger. It is high time to stop being afraid of the modern version of non-existent ghosts and goblins, otherwise known as “ai.” Stop scaring little boys and girls with superstitious monster stories and, instead, tell them what a wonderful new tool we now have! Like any tool, it increases the degree of freedom and power of the human mind to intervene in the universe. If we want a real “ai”, that will come from our speeding up the evolution of intelligent animals such as octopuses and seeding them on places like the oceans of Europa, the moon of Jupiter.

All-powerful, ever-pervasive AI is running out of internet https://spanish.lifeboat.com/blog/2024/06/all-powerful-ever-pervasive-ai-is-running-out-of-internet Sat, 08 Jun 2024 17:23:14 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2024/06/all-powerful-ever-pervasive-ai-is-running-out-of-internet

TO AVOID DATA COLLAPSE, Algorithmic Input models must have human-generated inputs, but those inputs are “running out” if only those existing on the internet are used.

There is no such thing as unlimited data.

China is Working on Bringing Nuclear Batteries to Smartphones, Making Charging Absolutely Obsolete https://spanish.lifeboat.com/blog/2024/01/china-is-working-on-bringing-nuclear-batteries-to-smartphones-making-charging-absolutely-obsolete Sat, 13 Jan 2024 22:22:22 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2024/01/china-is-working-on-bringing-nuclear-batteries-to-smartphones-making-charging-absolutely-obsolete

I want this.

A Chinese company called Betavolt Technology has started working on nuclear batteries, and if this turns into something that actually works, you can say goodbye to smartphone charging. Based on the information we have received, the company is working on batteries across several devices.

The nuclear batteries are able to hold a charge for 50 years. Yes, you have heard this right. If this technology ever sees the light of day and hits the mainstream, it is safe to say that our smartphone batteries will outlive many of us.

The company has talked about how they have pioneered the “miniaturization of atomic energy batteries.” Betavolt Technology managed to stuff 63 nuclear isotopes in a modular that is smaller than a coin. The model is called BV100, and it is capable of producing 100 microwatts of electricity, which should be more than enough when it comes to a smartphone.

The Future of Imaging? Metalenses and Spaceplates Allow Lens-Free Cameras and With Bigger Sensors https://spanish.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/11/the-future-of-imaging-metalenses-and-spaceplates-allow-lens-free-cameras-and-with-bigger-sensors Fri, 24 Nov 2023 22:22:30 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/11/the-future-of-imaging-metalenses-and-spaceplates-allow-lens-free-cameras-and-with-bigger-sensors

Are you ready for a cell phone with a medium-format-sized sensor?

It’s science time. New research tells us how, with the help of metalenses and spaceplates, we don’t need conventional lenses anymore. Furthermore, that will allow manufacturers to develop tiny cameras with bigger sensors. Read the highlights of the research below.

New research has found a solution for reducing the size of cameras, by combining both metalenses and spaceplates. That combination allows a significant reduction of the glass and the length from the camera sensor. The result can be a lens-free camera and a bigger sensor. Furthermore, it’s a whole new approach for how light can be focused, and utilized, that can result in manufacturing facilitation of both cameras and lenses.

Adding a spaceplate to an imaging system such as a standard camera will shorten the camera. An ultra-thin monolithic imaging system can be formed by integrating a metalens and a spaceplate directly on a sensor.

WiMi Developed Metasurface Eyepiece for Augmented Reality with Ultra-wide FOV https://spanish.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/09/wimi-developed-metasurface-eyepiece-for-augmented-reality-with-ultra-wide-fov Fri, 08 Sep 2023 19:22:32 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/09/wimi-developed-metasurface-eyepiece-for-augmented-reality-with-ultra-wide-fov Metalens for AR and VR.

BEIJING, Sept. 8, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — WiMi Hologram Cloud Inc. (NASDAQ: WIMI) (“WiMi” or the “Company”), a leading global Hologram Augmented Reality (“AR”) Technology provider, today announced that a metasurface eyepiece for augmented reality has been developed, which is based on metasurfaces composed of artificially fabricated subwavelength structures. The metasurface eyepiece employs a special optical design and engineered anisotropic optical response to achieve an ultra-wide field of view(FOV), full-color imaging, and high-resolution near-eye display.

At the heart of the WiMi’s metalens are see-through metalens with a high numerical aperture(NA), a large area and broadband characteristics. Its anisotropic optical response allows it to perform two different optical functions simultaneously. First, it can image virtual information, acting as an imaging lens for virtual information. Second, it can transmit light, serving as a transparent glass for viewing a real-world scene. This design allows the transparent metalens to be placed directly in front of the eye without the need for additional optics, resulting in a wider FOV.

Fabrication of metalens is done using nanoimprinting technology, which is capable of fabricating large-area metalens with sub-wavelength structures. First, a mould or template with the desired structure is prepared. Then, the mould or template is contacted with a transparent substrate and the nanoscale structure is transferred by applying pressure and temperature. Through this nanoimprinting process, the subwavelength structure of the metalens is successfully replicated onto the transparent substrate, resulting in the formation of the metalens.
