The history makes pretty clear cowpox does not immunize for smallpox. There were repeated epidemics in 100% vaccinated populations throughout the 19th century in numerous countries, and in some of these epidemics it is documented almost everybody infected had been vaccinated. The last epidemic on earth, according to the WHO report, 3/4 of the adult victims and the index case had been vaccinated. Smallpox and polio went away pretty much the same way as typhoid, scarlet fever, tuberculosis, bubonic plague, scurvy, cholera etc went away even though vaccines weren’t important for any of them– better sanitation, nutrition, and quarantine. But for smallpox, there was also a quarantine program that literally knocked on 2 billion doors to catch cases early and quarantine them.
And for polio, a study in JAMA 1959 showed more than 2/3 of the cases in the Detroit “polio” epidemic of 1958 didn’t even have polio virus. Also its not at all clear polio is being eradicated: they seem to have just replaced wild type with vaccine strain polio.

If that were true, I think you need to explain how polio (almost) and rinderpest and smallpox were eradicated then?

The programme to eradicate the diseases thought they were using vaccines — it seems to be working for polio currently.

The evidence that Vaccines have done much good is about as flimsy as the evidence they aren’t doing damage. Perhaps I will blog about that later, but in the meantime it is laid out here:

People get infectious diseases a lot less than they used to, but have you ever seen an actual argument vaccines had anything to do with it? What is that argument? If you think you can name one, have you ever looked at the evidence against it?

I didn’t think anyone thought that vaccines didn’t have some negative effects? The comparison to make is between the negative effects of the vaccine and the negative effects of the diseases they protect (to some extent) against in populations without herd immunity (otherwise you are relying on everyone else taking vaccines).

So, as I thought was common knowledge, vaccines are bad individually but societally have value. If you can prove that the negative effects outweigh that value, that would be significant.
